Why ReactJs is a Single-Page Application?

React is not a single-page application by itself — it is a library for building user interfaces. It gets called one because of what it does after the first load: React swaps the parts of the screen that changed instead of asking the server for a whole new page. One HTML document, many views. That is the whole idea, and everything below follows from it.

A single-page application is a trade. You buy a faster, smoother interface, and you pay for it in initial bundle size and in the SEO work you now have to do deliberately.

Why choose React for single-page applications?

React is an open-source JavaScript library maintained by Meta, and it is the one I reach for most often when a project genuinely needs an app-like interface. Six reasons it suits this job:

1. The virtual DOM. When data changes, React builds a new virtual tree of the page in memory, compares it with the previous virtual tree, and then updates only the parts of the real DOM that actually changed. No full reload, so the screen does not flash.
2. Component architecture. The interface breaks into small reusable pieces. This is the part that pays off at month six, not on day one — a well-split component tree is the difference between adding a feature in an hour and rewriting a screen.
3. Fast rendering. The reconciliation algorithm updates only the components whose data moved. On data-heavy screens — dashboards, tables that refresh — this is the difference you can feel.
4. Declarative syntax. You describe what the screen should look like for a given state, and React works out the steps to get there. You stop writing instructions for the browser and start writing the result you want.
5. A large ecosystem. Routing, state, forms, data fetching — the solved problems are genuinely solved, with libraries other people maintain.
6. It can be made SEO-friendly. Note the wording. It is not SEO-friendly by default.

The honest part: React and search engines

Early single-page applications were bad for search, because the page a crawler received was an empty div and a script tag. That is fixable now, with server-side rendering or prerendering, and frameworks like Next.js do most of the work for you. But it is work you have to choose to do.

This is where I give clients a straight answer. If your site is mainly content that needs to rank — a blog, service pages, a brochure site — a single-page application is the harder road to the same place. I would build that server-rendered and spend the saved effort on the content itself. Where React earns its keep is the application behind the login: dashboards, editors, booking screens, anything a person uses for twenty minutes rather than reads for two.

What takes longer than people expect is not the build. It is deciding which parts of a product actually need to be an application, and which were always just pages.
