Image to WebP Converter

Turn PNG and JPEG into WebP — smaller files, same picture.

Convert PNG and JPEG images to WebP in your browser, free, with no upload and no sign-up. WebP files are typically 25–35 % smaller than the same JPEG or PNG at the same visual quality, and every current browser displays them.

The same photo saved as WebP is typically a quarter to a third lighter than the JPG — less for a phone to download.

Convert to WebP in your browser. Nothing uploaded.

PNG, JPEG or WebP · up to 5 images · max 10 MB each · nothing is uploaded

Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored. Close the tab and it is gone.

Recommended browser: Works best in Google Chrome. Also tested in Firefox and Microsoft Edge; Safari opens everything except saving as WebP, and the tool tells you when that is the case.

About the image to webp converter

How to convert PNG or JPG to WebP without uploading

Drop the images on this page. They are decoded and re-encoded with your browser's own image code — the same canvas API that renders web pages — so there is no upload step and nothing to delete afterwards. That matters for client photos, product shots and anything under an NDA.

Pick a quality, convert, and download. At similar quality WebP is typically 25–35 % smaller than JPEG, so a 1.8 MB JPEG comes out at roughly 1.2–1.35 MB; a lower quality setting saves more. The exact figure depends on the picture, which is why the tool shows the before and after sizes for every file.

When to keep the original format

Keep PNG for logos and diagrams with hard edges and flat colour if you need lossless output — this converter is lossy. Keep JPEG when a platform refuses WebP uploads (a few email tools and older CMS plugins still do). For everything on a modern website, WebP is the safe default.

FAQ

Image to WebP Converter — questions

Is WebP better than JPEG or PNG?

For the web, usually. At the same visual quality a WebP file is typically a quarter to a third smaller than a JPEG, and it supports transparency like PNG at a fraction of the size.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Every current browser does — Chrome, Firefox, Safari (since 2020), Edge and the mobile browsers. Very old browsers do not, which is why some sites serve a JPEG fallback.

Does converting to WebP lose quality?

WebP here is lossy, like JPEG: the quality slider sets how much detail is kept. At 80–90 the difference from the original is hard to see; lower settings trade sharpness for size.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes — up to five per batch, up to 10 MB each. Download them one by one or all together as a zip.

Why are the filenames changed?

They are made web-safe: lower-case, hyphens for spaces, no special characters, and the extension becomes .webp. Clean filenames are easier to link and better for image search.
